Trigger Warning: Pet Loss
This post discusses the deeply emotional topic of dog euthanasia at home and the loss of a beloved pet. It shares a personal story and experiences surrounding a decision that many pet parents face. Please read with care and kindness, knowing that every choice made in these situations is deeply personal and comes from a place of love. We love you and are so sorry for your loss.
Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest things a pet parent can face. Almost a year ago, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to help our Hooch cross the rainbow bridge. He was the sweetest dog, full of love and loyalty, but in his final days, he lost function in his back legs, and his quality of life began to decline rapidly.

In the midst of this incredibly challenging time, we chose dog euthanasia at home. This decision was not made lightly, and I don’t believe there’s one “right way” to let go of a pet. Every situation is unique, and my heart goes out to any pet owner who has had to say goodbye to their furry family members. Here, I’ll share our journey with in-home euthanasia in the hopes that it might bring comfort or clarity to others facing this difficult process.
The Difficult Decision: Putting Our Dog's Comfort First
When it became clear that Hooch’s condition wasn’t improving, we had to weigh his quality of life against the pain and discomfort he was experiencing. This decision wasn’t easy—it’s the hardest thing a pet parent can face. We consulted with our regular veterinarian, who spoke candidly about end-of-life care and options. While taking him to the veterinary clinic was one option, the idea of moving him in his fragile state felt overwhelming and stressful for him. That’s when we started exploring in-home euthanasia.

Why We Chose At-Home Pet Euthanasia
The decision to opt for at-home pet euthanasia came down to two key factors:
- The Comfort of Familiar Surroundings
Hooch always found peace in his favorite spots at home. Allowing him to stay in a familiar environment, listening to the soundtrack of our home, felt like the kindest choice. He could rest in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by family members who loved him, listening to Tom Petty's Wildflowers album, one of our favorite ways to all relax together. - A Peaceful Passing with Compassionate Care
Home euthanasia provided a level of compassionate care that eased the process for both him and us. The compassionate veterinarian and technician who came to our home ensured that his final moments were as calm and pain-free as possible. And we were allowed to create the right environment for our own emotional comfort during his crossing of the rainbow bridge.

What to Expect During Home Pet Euthanasia Appointments
If you’re considering in-home euthanasia, knowing what to expect can help you feel more prepared during this difficult time. Here’s a brief overview of how the process worked for us:
- Consultation and Scheduling
We contacted a local home veterinary service that specialized in end-of-life care. They offered a detailed explanation of the procedure, additional fees like a travel fee, and options for memorializing our pet, such as a clay paw print, private cremation, and choice of urns. - The Actual Procedure
The technician and veterinarian arrived at our home and spent extra time making sure that we and our dog felt comfortable. They explained every step of the process, allowing us to ask questions and prepare ourselves for the process. When it was time, we were allowed to gather around our sweet Hooch, talk to him, pet him, and offer him comfort as well as treats he had never experienced before, like powdered sugar donuts, a family favorite treat. - Transportation of Your Pet
After Hooch’s peaceful passing, the team allowed us time alone with him to grieve and say goodbye. Afterward, they handled the transportation of his body with the utmost respect and care.

The Benefits of In-Home Euthanasia
One of the most significant benefits of in-home euthanasia is the ability to provide your beloved pet with a peaceful and intimate farewell in the comfort of their familiar surroundings. This option ensures that pets remain stress-free, avoiding the anxiety often associated with trips to a veterinary clinic. Services like Sweet Dreams prioritize this comforting experience by creating a serene environment where pets can spend their final moments surrounded by their favorite people and familiar smells.
Additionally, families are given the space and time to grieve privately, without the pressures or distractions of a clinical setting. By choosing in-home euthanasia, pet parents can offer their cherished companions a more calming passing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cost of in-home euthanasia?
The cost can vary depending on your location and the provider. Some home veterinary services charge a base fee, with additional charges for services like cremation or travel fees. If you plan to have your pet's ashes returned to you, the cremation itself will cost more than a communal cremation.
Is at-home euthanasia right for every pet?
Not necessarily. Larger pets or those with certain medical conditions may require special accommodations. Consulting your regular veterinarian can help you make an informed decision.
How can I prepare for a home euthanasia appointment?
Create a calm, quiet space in your home where your pet feels comfortable. You may also want to gather family members and decide how you’d like to memorialize your pet. A comforting soundtrack, candles, or even a viewing of your favorite movie to watch with your pet is all an option when you plan for an in-home service.
What happens after the procedure?
The veterinarian and technician will assist with the transportation of your pet for cremation or burial. Many providers offer options to memorialize your pet, such as paw prints or ashes also.

Choosing dog euthanasia at home was the best decision for our family during an incredibly difficult time. It allowed us to focus on what mattered most: giving our dog the peaceful passing he deserved.
To all the pet owners reading this, know that there’s no single “right way” to say goodbye to a beloved family pet. Whether at a veterinary clinic or in the comfort of your home, the love and care you give your pet in their final moments will always be what matters most.
If you’re facing this challenging time, my heart is with you. And know that your beloved pet knows they were deeply loved by you, and that love will live on, always.

I'm so heartbroken to hear Hooch had passed last year. I've been following your blog since 2021 since my senior dog had been diagnosed with stage 1 kidney disease as well. I, too, was horrified and hopeless over the diagnosis and cried and lost so much sleep, going through Google deep dives. The early stage of her diet involved all the recipes you provided (thank you so much!). How old was Hooch and how did his condition change with time? Thank you so much for sharing your memories and moments with Hooch. They have given me much hope to know that our babies can outlive the diagnosis and spend lots of quality years beside us.

Thank you so much for your sweet comment - losing Hooch has been one of the most difficult losses of my entire life. I'm honestly not sure the Hooch size hole in my heart will ever completely recover. It took me a whole year to even write this article, I just could not bring myself to do it. I am so glad you found the recipes I created for him and that they helped you and that his story gave you and your pups hope for the future. I know his story lives on in the hearts of so many people and pups.
Hooch actually stayed in remission from kidney disease the rest of his life. He was diagnosed stage 4 in December of 2019 and lived a happy, healthy, rambunctious life after our dietary and lifestyle changes until the fall of 2024 when at almost 15 years old (many years past the life expectancy of his breed) he started struggling with hip issues from old age. He stayed with us through Christmas of last year, but in January it was clear that the medications and injections he was receiving for the hip issues were no longer working. He was just so tired and it was apparent mid January that he was really starting to struggle and was ready to move on. It was such a hard decision to make, but it was 100% the right decision for him.
Caring for him was one of the greatest honors of my life and I am so glad that his journey beating kidney disease is documented and continues to help others to this day.

Wow, that's incredible news. Does that mean he no longer had kidney disease or was he just not symptomatic? He lived such an incredible, rich life. I'm so sorry that he passed from hip dysplasia. That must have been the hardest decision for you. My dog is also 15 (16 in May) and has been in stage 1/2 kidney disease since 2021, so it's been a high calling trying to provide bio-available, kidney friendly diets for her. That being said, she is starting to show some back leg weakness sometimes 🙁 wish your family the best of luck and a wonderful new year.
