Indulge in the Flavors of Cherry Ginger Chutney: A Summertime Delight

For a limited time each summer, my kitchen becomes a cherry haven during a cherry-palooza! My crisper drawer overflows with dark-sweet cherries, which I bake, preserve, and savor as much as I can before the season ends. Today, I'm thrilled to share with you an easy cherry ginger chutney recipe that has been a staple in my kitchen this year. It's a fantastic way to infuse the delightful flavor of cherries into savory dishes, whether from the grill or paired with epic cheese boards throughout the summer!

    What Exactly is Chutney?

Originating from India, chutney is a condiment that brings together fresh relishes made with exotic fruits and spices. However, in regions where mangoes and tamarind aren't readily available, chutney takes on a different form, cooked down with a combination of fresh and dried fruit, onions, spices, and sometimes vinegar.

The Perfect Combination: Easy Cherry Ginger Chutney Recipe

This particular chutney recipe combines dark-sweet cherries, both fresh and dried Bing cherries, dried hibiscus flowers (not to be mistaken for hibiscus tea!), lime juice, fresh ginger, and a medley of whole spices. A quick 20-minute cook on the stove yields a scrumptious balance of sweet and sour flavors that will leave your family wanting more!

Versatility at Its Best: How to Use Cherry Ginger Chutney

You might be wondering, "How can I make the most of this chutney?" Well, my friend, there are numerous ways to enjoy this easy cherry ginger chutney! One of our favorite methods is to serve it over lean roasted or grilled meats like chicken or pork tenderloin. Additionally, it elevates cheese boards and acts as an excellent ketchup substitute for dishes such as spicy bratwurst. For a delightful twist, add it to a grilled cheese sandwich. Remember, a little goes a long way due to the complex and potent flavors of this chutney. Start with small amounts and adjust according to taste.

What's the difference between chutney and relish?

The main differences are that chutney contains fruit and has larger pieces in it. Fruits like cherries and strawberries are normally left whole. Relish uses only vegetables and has smaller pieces.

How long does homemade chutney keep?

If it is jar sealed, it should last up to 2 months after the seal is broken. If it's not sealed, it should last about a week if properly stored in an air tight container.

    What is Chutney good for?

Chutney is a very versatile condiment. It goes well with chicken and pork dishes, sandwiches, and a great dip for charcuterie.
