Spooky Popcorn Mix {Beard and Bonnet}

Are you feeling spooky? I sure am! I absolutely love Halloween, and have jam packed this holiday week with as many Halloween activities as I can fit in. I am teaming up with a friend of mine to provide fun gluten free Halloween snacks for Kash’s preschool class, we are decorating her car trunk with one of the most elaborate skull and cross bones set ups you will ever see for Trunk-or Treat, and of course we are trick or treating. In between all of those fun activities we have pumpkin carving, making Kash’s Box Troll costume, and we have to come up with a Halloween costume that is cool enough for Eliza to wear it to middle school. Phew! I am sort of exhausted just thinking about all of it!

Luckily, I have two very imaginative kids that love to help with all things Halloween related. So, when I asked Kash what type of snack his friends would like for Trunk-or-Treat day he declared “Popcorn with goblin body parts!!” Seriously, this kid watches WAY too much Scooby-Doo. It took a while for me to come up with a plan, but I think we nailed it.

I enlisted the help of my super imaginative friend Cara of Fork and Beans for the spooky googly eyes, which are gluten free and vegan. They are actually pretty easy to make and when your toddler sees you hand piping all of the eyes onto a sheet pan they will declare you are the BEST mom in the whole wide world. Seriously, it happened! Kash deemed the gluten free candy corn we found at the grocery goblin teeth, and we both decided that gluten free pretzel sticks look a lot like pieces of goblin hair.

Kash is so exited to share this mix with his friends this week and I adore that it is the outcome of our two imaginations working together to create one tasty snack. Now onto creating that super cool preteen costume…suggestions?

Spooky Popcorn Mix {Beard and Bonnet}

Spooky Popcorn Mix
Serves: 4-6 adults 10-12 toddlers for snack time
  1. Heat the oil and popcorn in a large, deep metal pot over high heat. Have the pot lid ready!! When the first kernels of popcorn begin to pop cover with the lid and slide the pan around vigorously over the heat to move the kernels in the pan. If the pan fills up before the kernels are finished popping simply transfer some of the popped corn to a large bowl, replace the lid and move the pan back over the heat until all of the popcorn is popped.
  2. Remove from the heat, season with salt, and allow the popcorn to cool completely. Toss in the pretzels, candy corn, and vegan googly eyes just before serving.
Prep time does not include making the googly eyes.
