Easy Blueberry Lemonade; An Essential Recipe for Summer

Summer is in full swing, and there's no better way to cool down on a hot day than with a refreshing glass of Blueberry Lemonade. California-grown blueberries are the perfect way to add a bit of both sweet and tart flavor to the most classic summertime drink, lemonade, all while lending their vibrant color to the mix.

California is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, from its sun-kissed beaches to its majestic redwoods. However, the bounty of the Golden State's agricultural harvest is equally impressive. Recently, I visited Fairfield Farms a beautiful blueberry and avocado farm in Pauma Valley, San Diego County with my friends at California Grown.

Spencer Steed, a second-generation farmer, gave us a tour of the property, and let me tell you - it was a feast for the senses!

From picking perfectly plump blueberries from the bushes to a tractor ride up a mountain to harvest avocados.

Fairfield Farms is an organic, family-owned, operated farm in Pauma Valley, California. The farm was founded in 2003 by Carol and Bill Steed, and they have been growing blueberries and avocados ever since.

Fairfield Farms is committed to sustainable farming practices. They use solar power to reduce their energy consumption and drip irrigation to conserve water. They also practice crop rotation and use natural pest control methods to keep their crops healthy.

Why Should You Choose California Blueberries?

What makes California blueberries unique? It all comes down to the perfect blend of California's sun, soil, and innovative farming methods.

California's blueberries are nutrient powerhouses packed with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins. But what truly sets them apart is their fresh, vibrant flavor, a testament to the ideal growing conditions and sustainable farming practices employed by California's farmers.

Best Tips For Buying and Storing California Blueberries.

    1. When buying blueberries, look for firm, plump berries with a uniform hue.
    2. They should have a natural, silvery sheen, an indication of freshness.
    3. To store, refrigerate them in their original container, unwashed, until you're ready to enjoy them.
    4. If you wish to freeze them, wash and pat dry the berries, then freeze them in a single layer before transferring them to a freezer-safe container.

Experience the Flavor: California Blueberry Lemonade

One of the highlights of our trip to Fairfield Farms was a picnic under the shade of a majestic tree on the property that was served with Blueberry Lemonade.

The berry-laced lemonade was refreshing and crisp, bright and tart all at the same time. It was exactly what we needed after a morning in the sun. Once I arrived home, I knew I had to give making my own a try so that we could indulge ourselves with big refreshing glasses of Blueberry Lemonade all summer long!

This almost too easy-to-sip recipe comes in two parts, an iconic California Grown Lemonade recipe and a luscious blueberry syrup that is not only great added to lemonade but is also delicious in cocktails, as a syrup for ice cream, or even pancakes. It's a total winner of a summer syrup; if you ask me that is only limited by your imagination in which ways you can use it.

    California Grown Lemonade

Fun fact: California grows over 90% of the lemons available in the United States. This means they definitely know a thing or two about lemons and what to make with them!

    Blueberry Syrup

This recipe for Blueberry Syrup only takes about 20 minutes to make and requires only four simple ingredients. Fresh California blueberries, water, honey, and sugar.

Let's discuss how to make Blueberry Syrup.

Step-by-Step How to Make Blueberry Syrup for Blueberry Lemonade.

Add California blueberries to a saucepan.
    Add water.
    Add sweeteners.
    Cook for 15 minutes.
    Strain out the solids.
Transfer the syrup to a lid with a tight-fitting lid.

Once you have stocked up on that sticky sweet Blueberry Syrup, it is time to make a batch of the best lemonade you've ever tasted.

Place cooled blueberry syrup in a large pitcher.
    Add lemonade.
Add fresh or frozen blueberries. Frozen will act as ice cubes!
    Add ice.
    Garnish with lemon.

It is just that easy! The best form of summer refreshment, ready in 20 minutes, to help you beat the heat.

    Ingredients

    Scale

    To make Blueberry Syrup

    2 cups fresh California blueberries

    2 cups water

    ¼ cup honey

¼ cup sugar; you can use up to ½ cup sugar if you prefer a much sweeter syrup.

    To make Blueberry Lemonade

    ¾ cup Blueberry Syrup

One batch of California Grown Lemonade.

    Instructions

    To make Blueberry Syrup:

In a medium-sized saucepan, cook the blueberries, water, sugar, and honey for 15 minutes over medium heat.

Strain the solids from the liquid.

Cool completely, then store in an airtight, food-safe container like a glass jar.

    To make Blueberry Lemonade:

Combine the desired amount of Blueberry Syrup and one batch of lemonade in a large pitcher. Stir to combine.

Add fresh or frozen blueberries, ice, and sliced lemon to the pitcher, and serve immediately.

    Notes

If making in advance you can combine the desired amount of syrup and lemonade, then store it in the refrigerator.  When ready to serve,  garnish with berries, ice, and lemons until right before serving.

This syrup recipe makes enough to make 4-5 batches of Blueberry Lemonade.
