As I was perusing the farmer's market last Wednesday evening I spotted the most beautiful fresh cherries at one of my favorite organic fruit booths. The beautifully deep, rich hues of red immediately drew me in; I grabbed a sample and indulged in what has been a constant craving for the past few months. Cherries are one of my favorite fruits of all time, but the frozen ones just don't do it for me so I anxiously await their arrival at the market every year. Back east I wouldn't see them until sometime in June usually, but living in sunny southern California they have started to pop up already.
I grabbed 2 cartons, headed two booths over for a few limes and hurried home for a little cherry margarita action. Because you know... it's Cinco de Mayo! Todd tends to like his margaritas on the savory side as opposed to a super sweet version, so for this particular recipe I toned down the sweet meter a bit. Of course, all you have to do to amp it back up is add a bit more agave.
These bad boys pair well with just about any type of Mexican fare, but if you need a few suggestions here are a few of my favorites:
Hush Puppy Tacos
Black Bean Enchiladas With Roasted Red Pepper Cashew Cream
Sweet Potato & Lime Taquitos
Super Easy Taco Bake
Black Bean Flautas
Roasted Poblano Chilaquiles
White Bean & Potato Tacos
Huevos Rancheros Enchiladas
Fresh Cherry & Lime Margarita
- Prep Time: 3 mins
- Total Time: 3 mins
- Yield: 1 1x
Ingredients
- 12-15 fresh cherries, stems removed, pitted, and minced *see note
- juice of 1 large lime
- 1 ounce blanco tequila
- ½ ounce Grand Marnier
- 1 - 2 tablespoons agave nectar or honey for sweetness
- ice
- tonic water
Garnish
- Lime wedges
- Fresh cherries
Instructions
- Combine the minced cherries, lime juice, tequila, Grand Marnier, agave nectar, and a 3 or 4 cubes of ice into a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds. Use a fine mesh strainer to strain the liquid into a cocktail glass pressing on the solids with the back of a spoon to release all of the moisture. Add ice to fill the glass and top with a splash of tonic for a bubbly effect. Stir to combine and garnish with a lime wedge and cherry.
Notes
To make quick work of mincing the cherries simply place them in a food processor and process them until they are chopped very fine
Margarita's are definitely my drink of choice on Cinco de Mayo and if I am being totally honest, they are my drink of choice on most weekends too. What's not to love? Tequila, some type of fruity filler, and the sultry sensation of a salt or sugar rim on the tongue. Today I have gathered over 50 margarita recipes all worthy of this year's Cinco de Mayo festivities or just your standard Taco Tuesday. Cheers and celebrate the holiday safely!
